GEEZUS O' DA WEAK--May 1, 2010
In the prophetic and apostolic tradition of ridiculing the ridiculous and scorning the superficial, I present to you this week's example of the god of the refrigerator, the deity of the dashboard:
BUDDY GEEZUS NUMBER 1.
BUDDY GEEZUS NUMBER 1.
The Buddy Geezus is unique among all the categories of geezi we've studied here at Al Tosap. It's the friendliest one of all. The point of the Buddy Geezus is to remind us that God isn't all that different from us. In fact, he's our buddy!
Tickle fight!

GEEZUS O' DA WEAK--April 19, 2010
In the prophetic and apostolic tradition of ridiculing the ridiculous and scorning the superficial, I present to you this week's example of the god of the refrigerator, the deity of the dashboard:
HUNK NEXT DOOR GEEZUS NUMBER 3.

The standard for a geezus being officially designated Hunk Next Door Geezus is very high. Any Hunk Next Door Geezus has to exhibit a sexiness in tune with current trends in date movies, but has to look a little older than a member of the latest boy band. Girls must want to talk to any Hunk Next Door Geezus and every young guy has to want to look like any Hunk Next Door Geezus. As a result, a geezus may achieve the title of Hunk Next Door Geezus and then lose it as Hollywood and pop music change and it becomes like all lame and stuff you know. So the contemporary status of the Hunk Next Door Geezus is just as important as the actual looks of the geezus.
Hunk Next Door Geezus Number 3 achieves both wonderfully and I think Hunk Next Door Geezus Number 3 will stay current for a long time.

WHY WE SHOULDN'T JUDGE JOHN PIPER--REALLY
Recently, there's been a huge flap over John Piper's invitation of a false teacher to preach at a conference. I think I jumped the gun a bit. As soon as I heard that Piper had sinned like this I thought he should be censored.
Fortunately, cooler heads reminded folks like me that before we insist that a pastor like Piper obey Scripture we should wait and see if the false teacher might be reformed by the experience of preaching in Piper's conference. Some even suggested that Piper might just have a "plan" and we don't know what that is.

Ridiculous? Well, let me tell you a short story from my past that really is true and plainly illustrates just how a preacher preaching one religion can accidentally convert himself to another religion just so long as we all wait to see:
My Really True Story That Really Happened, Really.
When I was still attending a Baptist church, the board and pastor invited a Big Wig from the local Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses to preach an evening sermon. AND just as you'd expect, for weeks before the appointed time all the little old busy-body ladies and the men who were self-appointed leaders of the more-biblical-than-thou crowd were in a fit. The pastor told them to wait and see. Fortunately for the pastor, there was no business meeting scheduled before the night the JW guy (Roger was his name) was to speak. I say that's a good thing because they were going to take a vote and they were hoping they had enough votes to fire the pastor or at least cancel the Spring Pastor Appreciation Potluck! And all that without waiting to see.
What a bunch o' bigots!
Well, when the night service came we did all the usual things, sing the hymns, take the evening offering--twice, etc. Under the Baptist facade, though, the tension was thick. I trembled with anticipation, antacids, and apprehension. I looked across the pews and could see that one old guy was ready to take notes to trap Roger in something he said. "What a jerk," I thought to myself. My heart was actually beating so hard I could feel it when Roger walked up to the podium.
He started by saying "good evening" and thanking the pastor for inviting him to speak and explain just why JW's don't believe Jesus was God. Jesus was a great and holy man. He was even a prophet. He just wasn't God. He was created.
That's went it happened.
All Baptist heck broke out!!!!! Four deacons rushed the pulpit area and wrestled Roger to the floor. Mics went everywhere, making electonic squawks and squeeks and thuds. Roger ended up with one deacon on each arm and each leg, carrying Roger to the baptismal. Roger was struggling, kicking, flailing. He had a bloody nose and an electic cord wrapped around one leg.
I heard one of the deacons cuss when Roger bit his hand.
Two other deacons headed for the baptismal tank and opened up the front. The pastor was already inside. The four deacons on Roger tried throwing him in the tank but couldn't. Roger fought hard. He didn't WANT to become a Baptist. The other two deacons headed in and helped. In went Roger, head first, yelling, wiggling, and not really happy. One of his feet hit Pastor in the face, breaking his glasses. Splash! Bang! Down went Pastor.
Water was slopping all over the place! Pastor and Roger came back up, sputtering and coughing. Roger was in better shape than Pastor. Pastor's glasses were hanging off one ear with one lense cracked and the other gone.
But Roger! You should have seen Roger. His face started glowing. He was giggling. Then he stopped giggling. Stopped breathing. Stopped like a statue. Slowly he started feeling his whole body from shoulders to knees as if he was looking for lost keys or checking for wounds. The whole place went silent...... Then Roger started saying something under his breath. No one could hear. Pastor leaned in, straining hard to hear. A fat lady up front leaned so hard the front pew fell over, spilling hymnals, Bibles, and unread-but-scribbled-in quarterlies. It was the only thing heard for what must have been ten minutes. You could almost hear yourself sweat. The deacons stood still, leaned, and listened. Eventually he spoke a little louder and a little louder..."Jesus IS God. Jesus IS God...." over and over slowly until he was shouting at the top of his lungs.
Soon the whole congregation was chanting with him "...Jesus IS God. Jesus IS God..." like they were in a strange sort of political rally. Ladies and deacons were crying. Pastor was speaking in tongues--yes, a Baptist pastor--tongues. The building was shaking, organ wailing "Just as I Am". Teenagers were being slain in the Spirit and small children were promising their parents never to be naughty again.
The next day the whole town was clean and fresh. The Kingdom Hall and the Catholic church were being boarded up and had for-sale signs. The bars were being demolished by wrecking crews and Roger had all the Kingdom Hall folks over at Pastor's door to sign up for new converts class.
So that's why I think we'd better wait and see if John Piper might have a secret plan to convert Rick Warren.
You never know.
WHAT!....why are you looking at me that way?.....it really happened....just like I told you......really.....I'm NOT lying....oh, shut up....you're a fundie, aren't you?......go away......I hate people like you......you could be more loving, you know.........
COMING UP: PART VIII OF THE LOST DOCTRINE. This wasn't planned, but the recent mess with John Piper and Rick Warren is a result of the rejection of the biblical practice of corporate holiness. The doctrine of holiness HAS been abandoned. As a result we can't do what Christians have done historically--get rid of wolves in the sheep.

GEEZUS O' DA WEAK--April 6, 2010
In the prophetic and apostolic tradition of ridiculing the ridiculous and scorning the superficial, I present to you this week's example of the god of the refrigerator, the deity of the dashboard:
RIDICULOUSLY UNBIBLICAL GEEZUS NUMBER 1.
This is an example of the Ridicuously Unbiblical Geezus. Now, you may say, aren't all geezuspichurz unbiblical, since they're idols? Yes, but the Ridiculously Unbiblical Geezus is an attempt to pretend that its geezus depicts some biblical scene or theme, as opposed to most geezuspichurs which make absolutely no pretense of being anything but fantasy. So, while pretending biblical sincerity, the Ridiculously Unbiblical Geezus is especially dishonest, because it pretends to be biblical and then ignores even the most simple of biblical facts.
Notice Ridiculously Unbiblical Geezus Number 1 is carrying a cross. With no blood, no nakedness, no torn flesh, no being spat upon, no mocking crowd, no prodding soldiers, Ridicuously Unbiblical Geezus Number 1 works because it helps us to imagine that we believe in a geezus who died.........but in a very un-messy way.
Neat!

UNTYING A VERY PRODIGAL KNOT
Dear Prodigal Knot, I've enjoyed communicating with you over the last couple years alot on these blogs. However, I really think you need to be straightened out and I think I know just the fellow to do it. His name is Dr. Darrell Cox.
As it happens, he is speaking at a Baptist church here in Billings and I know he's qualified because of the poster I found in our laundromat made on a home computer with a cheap printer and pinned over some other guy's poster advertising his little home based business, because Dr. Cox is much more important than the little people. The poster listed Dr. Cox's accomplishments. Here are a few to help you understand just how big a wig he is in the religious boobeousie :
1. Pastor of Trinity Baptist Church for over 20 years.
2.Membership of his church is approximately 900 members.
3. Averages over 885 per Sunday in Sunday School.
4.In the year 2004, there were 9,370 souls saved & 1,347 people were baptized.
5. Runs 19 bus routes with an average of 600 people or more per Sunday.
6.Church supports 120 missionaries.
7. Trinity Baptist Academy (Christian School) was started in 1995.
Now, pay attention, PK, because any man who saved over 9,000 folks in one year all on his own ought to be heeded. I mean, Paul didn't even do that. He had to depend on the power of the gospel. Kinda a crutch, I'd say. After all, who needs God's Spirit. We got Darrell, bib overalls-n-all! Hummmm, wonder if he has one of those Southern Baptist puffy hairdoes, where great amounts of effort, hairspray, and prayer are used in a sincere attempt to make an old preacher look like he has the same hair he did in 1963.....? Perhaps, you could come to Billings, where Dr. Cox will be inflicted upon us here and mean preach the gospel of gaaaawwww-duh......at the Gospel Baptist Church at 1246 Cook Street at 7pm March 29 and 30.
You could see his hair!
You know how to get hold of me. You can stay at my house. Come and let Dr. Cox bless the devil (and the doctrines of grace) outta ya.
Tongue in Cheek,
Phil Perkins. PS--For those of you who haven't met PK, he's a great guy, a solid and serious student of Scripture and Christian. His website is here.

PASSING AN IMPORTANT BILL
Here's a logical chain for your consideration:
1. Bill is very religious, but he doesn't know much Scritpure.
2. Scripture is God's word to us as a group and to each one of us personally.
3. When one person loves another, the first listens to what the second has to say and reads his/her letters with great interest.
4. Scripture says the saints are new creatures, including a great love for God.
5. Because of point 1, we know Bill must not read much Scripture.
6. Because of point 5, we know Bill doesn't love God.
7. Because of points 4 and 6, we know Bill isn't regenerate.
Don't be a Bill.

O-D-M-s and E-G-O-s--Frank Turk Googles Himself.
Something happened today that actually made me start a new blog post category. For a long time I've had STUPID THINGS EVANGELICALS SAY. Today I offer you, my three readers, the first post in the new category, STUPID THINGS EVANGELICALS DO.
Most of us can remember someone, usually a girl, from our childhood who was constantly showing off her shoes or new outfit or bicycle. Or she actually ASKED if you thought she was pretty. Remember her?
I know you don't want to, but try.
Even at a very young age, most thought such behavior was childish and narcissistic. Of course, few of us could pronounce "narcissistic", let alone know what it means, so we just said she was "conceited" or some such thing as that.
So it's natural to expect that, in the humble and godly world of Evangelical bloggers and church leaders, no one (and I mean NO ONE) would ever, ever do such a thing. So, here's my question:
WHY DO SO MANY OF THEM GOOGLE THEMSELVES TO SEE WHAT THE REST OF US ARE THINKING ABOUT THEM?

Grown men, who expect you to think they're godly, pretending to be godly, often using pretend names like kids playing fort, pretending to do all they do for the glory of God, actually look the internet over to find what folks are saying about them. Not looking out for God's reputation, but looking out for THEIR reputation.
This is how I know they're doing this: If a name is mentioned in a post or in a comment thread, the person named will often just show up at a blog they don't ever follow. Or, at times, a representative for them or for their organization does so. They're either monitoring or they are paying someone on staff to monitor what you say to see if you like them. Yes, some of the big guys actually take money from honest Christians who give it for the glory of God and use it for their glory.
Here are some recent examples I've come across in the last few weeks: Tim Challies showed up at Surphside here to once again assure everyone that he didn't say what he said. Yes, all our screens were lying. (Perhaps it's a virus.) Rick Warren apologist, Richard Abanes, showed up here to defend RW and so did Ken Silva to add what he had to say. And then there was another who had a shill show up at another site, but I'll refrain from naming him. Finally, Frank Turk turned up on the comment thread of yesterday's post here at Al Tosap.
I was wondering if Challies would show, but I'm not surprised that he didn't because when he showed up at Surphside, I asked if he googled himself. He didn't answer.
I don't blame him.
When one is writing, it's really like self-employment. One has to consider just how to spend the hours. And if one is blogging a Christian blog, one would think most hours would go into writing articles that help others to better understand Scripture and live a godly life.
So this demands an answer: FRANK TURK, WHY ARE YOU SPENDING TIME GOOGLING YOURSELF?
And do you still call yourself "Centurion"? What about your keyboard? Do you call your key board "Stallion" or "Charger" or "Silver" or "Steed"? Is your router "Lassie" or "Rin Tin Tin"?
Just asking,
Phil Perkins. PS--I know this isn't the post I promised. A pregnancy in the family took most of my day, twice to the clinic, three trips for prescriptions. So Part II of THE SECRET SINS OF THE ODMs will come tomorrow, God willing.

BLESSED NEWS--I guess.
This is really great news. I've recently noticed that when I leave comments on some blogs they get saved right away. FANTASTIC!!!! The thing that worries me, though, is that they never seem to progress. They never get sanctified or baptized. No progressive sanctification.
Pray for my comments. I think they're carnal. Maybe they just prayed the prayer but weren't really sincere.
Hoping,
Phil Perkins.

STEALING FROM SERVANTS
Boydmiller is a fellow I met on another comment line and he thinks we ought not give pastors, missionaries, evangelists anything to live on. In stead, they should "work with their hands" like everyone else.
No, wait. That statement's too embarassing because of a little thing called THE BIBLE. So now it's okay in Boydworld to give them something. Yes, we now have express permission from Boyd to give them "food and drink". Thanks, Boyd.
But, money is still bad.
So I asked if I should stop sending money to missions and start sending sandwiches and Koolaid.
I await his answer.

Narcissism As A Christian Virtue?
Yesterday or the day before I was in my work truck going for material or some such when I had the great misfortune to hear a broadcast of "Family Life Today." FLT is a branch ministry of the late Bill Bright's Campus Crusade for Christ. I cannot believe a godly man like Dr. Bill would think some of the things coming out of FLT these days are all that bright. For instance, not long ago I heard FLT puff vision casting (a New Age religious practice) and they did an interview with Emergent heretic, Donald Miller. When I emailed them to fill them in with Miller quotes indicating he hates the gospel, I was rebuked and the heretic defended, because not all his stuff was bad. There was some good stuff in there, too, you know.
Well, peachy. Too bad Joseph Smith is dead. He'd make a pretty good interview, doncha think? He was big on family. Especially wives.
Well, this particular day, Bob Lepine or the other guy was interviewing one really nasty, narcissistic woman who'd written some sappy book about "the language of love." (Don't ask. All I'll tell you is it's a self-centered quazi-Christian fad once quite in vogue with the comb-over crowd and their wives and now in the death throws of its usefulness for hawking imitation-Christian books and conferences to churchies with more time and money than sanctification and common horse sense.)
Anyway, back to the wicked witch of FLT...Proverbs 31 she ain't. Now as I entered the listening audience, I hadn't eaten recently so I chanced a short listen. It seems all men just really bite. Yep, men--especially if they don't act like women--are stupid, dumb, ignorant, and supposed to guess just exactly what their women want and if they don't guess right, well they should just be shot, and that's all there is to it.
At dawn.
With a very large gun.
Preferably in the groin area.
With the mood set, we go to the specifics of our conversation between the very sensitive, always-caring, never-doubting-the-word-of-a-woman, sweet, likely-to-buy-flowers-for-no-reason-at-all, never-kicks-the-puppy Family Life Today emcee manette and the wonderful interviewee telling all of America just how hell-bent all men are. (Except the aforementioned lilac of a guy from FLT, ie., the manette.)
The subject was something like, "A man should guess what his wife wants and just give it to her right this instant or be killed." Never once did the interviewer or the interviewee suggest the wife might TELL THE POOR GUY just what that could be. No, that, of course, would not prove his sensitivity (pronounthed thenth-u-tiv-u-tee.) Love language is a language you learn on your own, I guess. Does Rosetta Stone have a CD on that? On the other hand, if he got it wrong, that does prove his INSENSITIVITY, THAT DIRTY, ROTTEN MAN!!!!
The topic narrowed down to taking the wife out for a nice dinner or some event. Two things were important here. First of all, the man was to do so without any expectation of any sort of payback. He was not even to think about getting something for his efforts; the woman could smell his thoughts and be "turned off." Naturally, having an IQ only slightly below the legal limit for blood alcohol, I knew they were talking about...well...you know. And all this makes sense to me since the average bride marries in the hope that the suit next to her in front of the preacher finds her physically repugnant, right?
So, let's get this straight. If the woman wants something, the guy had better guess it right and give it to her pronto. On the other hand, the woman was actually under moral obligation to deny the man what she had known her husband wanted since they were 17. Yeah. That sounds biblical. Just ignore the Scripture. Paul said in I Corinthians 7:5, "Stop depriving one another, except by agreement for a time..." But what did Paul know? He was a man. And undoubtedly a dirty, rotten man, or he wouldn't have said such a thing.
It seems some of the Corinthians were Bob Lepine fans. Their translation of Genesis said, "Be fruitful and multiply with an abacus." And in Hebrews there's the section that says, "Let the marriage bed be undefiled by a husband." That's in the Hysterically Angry Women's Study Edition of the BLV (Bob Lepine Version.)
The second thing about taking the wife out for dinner, was that even if the man loved his wife enough to go to the vet for neutering, he was still just a dirty, rotten, evil man if he failed to get the dinner just right. If he got it right he would graduate from mere man to absolutely fabulous manette and be eligible to work for Family Life Today, calling all men everywhere to repent and be fem. And what made the dinner and flowers just right? Well, the wife had to feel loved. (I'm not exaggerating on this point. They were talking about the wife not feeling loved.) If he got the wrong kind of flowers or the dinner just didn't do it for her, that's it. The guy's a dud. In that case, the dirty, rotten man who got himself neutered (probably for his own selfish reasons) had to try harder next time. Keep guessing until you get the right flowers and pray her tastes don't change. (I'm not exaggerating. The correctness of the man's actions and the validity of him to his wife was based on her feeling or not feeling loved! Please, someone...anyone...if this isn't severe narcissism, tell me what is!) It was his job to keep guessing until he got it right and she...you guessed it...felt loved. Then she would actually like her husband, he would become a full-fledged, card-carrying, lilac-scented manette, and they would both move to wherever Family Life Today spews from and he could start work there as soon as he was properly fitted with a pink tutu and tights.
That was the conclusion of that part of the discussion. If the man did all he could to make the woman feel loved without any expectation of sex and she did not feel loved, it was the responsibility of the man to continue trying things to make her happy until something worked for her and remain celebate until death do us part.
Even the financial wastefulness is mind-blowing. Imagine a young husband blowing $100 for an evening. Then the wife tells him, "No, it wasn't right, Honey. I don't feel loved. Try again," either in words or in her pouty attitude. What is her responsibility? How much should be spent to make this hag happy? Why is she entitled to such waste? Why shouldn't she be thrifty and care for the welfare of the household? Why can't her husband find a cyanide capsule to bite?
I tell young guys, "Pretty lasts about 2 weeks." With a hag like that, there is no pretty. Five minutes with her and I'd put a gun in my mouth. Solomon called a selfish, hard-to-please woman a dripping faucet. The hag of FLT is a gusher.
Doesn't the Bible tell the woman to love the husband, too? Does that count? Or was that inserted by an evil male scribe too stubborn to wear a tutu? Is not this nasty wife worse than a spoiled, demanding child? After all, she's old enough to know better. This sort of thing isn't Christian. It's not even adult.
Why did it not occur to the interviewer that the woman in front of him was advocating rebellion against God? She promoted unthankfulness. When I was young and my cousin was busy discovering fire, if a total stranger gave me something and I acted unthankful, I'd get whipped until I apologized and said, "Thank you." The hag of FLT says a wife is not even supposed to live up to a simple biblical standard of civility recognized by the world! I tell you, as God is my witness, that woman deserves severe discipline. She is in sin and so is Family Life Today. They are meddling in hundreds of marriages, injecting them with sinful attitudes in the name of God. They do not recognize sin because they do not know God's character. They do not know God's character because they study self-help books and not the Bible. That's why it didn't occur to the interviewer. He doesn't think biblically. There's no Bible in his head--only self-help manuals written from the flesh and radio ratings figures in the 30-55-year-old-unhappy-women-who-go-to-church-because-they-fantasize-about-the-pastor-because-he's-so-much-more-sensitive-than-my-husband demographic.
Think of it for a moment. If you acted like that toward a co-worker, you'd eventually be fired for hurting morale. It's okay for an FLT-trained wife, though, to treat her husband that way. Why? And will she wonder why her husband is never home?
I couldn't take anymore. I turned it off.
On balance, I didn't go back to that program and listen to more sin called Christianity. Right now the divorce rate among Christians is virtually the same as the world around us. If Family Life Today gives the same sort of self-centered advice to husbands, we should be in first place shortly.
And don't get me wrong, if my daughter was married to a man as selfish as this interviewee was I'd be tempted to kill the guy. If she was going to marry such a jerk, I'd take her to lunch and have a little talk with her. In Siberia. For about ten years.
This is why I call the church back into the Bible. Nothing on that program was Christian. None of the thought patterns were biblical. It was carnal. It was selfish. It mitigated against the man as head of the home. It encouraged wives to be self-centered, demanding narcissists who abused their God-given husbands. It glorified and sanctified unthankfulness and rebellion. It called evil good and good evil. I pity any girl brought up by a woman like the hag of FLT. Such a girl will be as good as divorced before she reaches twelve because no man could stand her for any amount of time. And she'll bring the divorce because in her mind the man is evil. He has to be--he's the man.
Family Life Today says to hope your spouse makes you have nice feelings. Scripture says to deny yourself. Family Life Today says if your spouse doesn't give you nice feelings, deny him/her something he/she wants. Scripture says to deny yourself. Family Life Today says thankfulness is contingent on whether or not you like the gift given. Scripture says to deny yourself and give thanks in all things.
Family Life Today or Scripture. Narcissism or self-denial. The flesh or the Spirit.
I'll tell you what, though. The hag of Family Life Today sure made me love my wife more. I called her and told her right from the truck that day.
In Christ,
Phil Perkins.
The Problem Of Evil (the other guy's, that is)
The Problem Of Evil is a deep philosophical argument developed from a very sophisticated study of the deep human need to complain a lot. It sounds intellectual. It's just whining at the graduate studies level. To put it in a simple syllogism, we can state it this way:
A. I had a really bad day, what with disasters and war and all.
B. Therefore, there is no God.
I've often been assailed by unbelievers (and pouting believers) howling about how bad the world is and doesn't that prove there's no God. Tsunamis, earthquakes, fires, disease, despots, murderers, thieves, abusers of children...
"Yes," I say, "and which one of those are you?"
In Christ,
Phil Perkins.

PHARISEES OF LUUV
There is a new Pharisee in town. Like the Pharisee of old, she is pompous. Unlike the Pharisee of old, she cloaks her sin in a false righteousness of love, instead of a false righteousness of law keeping. By using the term “she” I am not implying that all the new Pharisees are female, only that they are feminine.
I. Identity of the Pharisees of Luuv.
The Pharisees of Luuv major on religion and minor on obedience. They are the uptight, white-knuckled, super religious folks in every Evangelical church bent on making sure everyone else knows just how “loving” they are. They hate others, forbid to speak much of sin and righteousness, and ban terms like “false-teacher,” “liar,” or “repent.”
Sometimes other names for these modern zealots come to mind. Here are a few of my favorites. Take and keep the ones you like. I call them the Laodecians of Luuv, the Willowy Wusses of Wimpism, the Uptight Ultra-religious, the Sultans of Smarm, the Sadducees of Sap, or simply Smarmisees. Make up your own and share them with your friends. The Spirit used humorous terms for the terminally pious like White-washed Walls, Dung Heaps, Dogs, Liars, and many more. So this is a scriptural practice, a sound learning device, and loads of fun. Your kids will love it.
II. Evangelical Luuv defined.
A. How in the world can I pair up the idea of love with the idea of Pharisees? I don’t.
There is a difference between what the Scripture calls love and what an American Evangelical (I am one) calls love. For this article I will spell Evangelical love “Luuv,” capitalizing the noun form to indicate deity in the mind of its disciples. When spoken the vowel sound of Luuv is to be lengthened for emphasis. Add a churchy accent of your favorite flavor and you’ll have it. (Rick Warren did this in his address to the Baptist World Congress in Birmingham, England.) Scriptural love will be spelled in the conventional way—“love” because that’s what it is.
B. Evangelical Luuv may be scripturally defined as the pursuit, glorification, or valuing of that which is soft, smooth, and not likely to cause offense or controversy.
C. Luuv appears in Scripture as a vice, not a virtue.
Clergy that cow tow to this idol are threatened with God’s wrath. In Malachi God promises to seed their faces with the dung of their own religion, pronounce against their children and grandchildren, and then take the clergy out with the garbage (chapter 2, verse 3.) Evangelical Luuv is, at heart, a pursuit of things that are smooth and comforting. On the part of the clergy, it is a failure to point out the sins in our midst because the pastor doesn’t want to be ridiculed. In Malachi’s words they “show partiality in the Law.”
D. God is NOT Luuv and He never has been.
“God is Luuv,” the mantra of the spiritually mediocre, is a VERY precious lie to us Evangelicals. We depend on it to spare us from twinges of conscience and to forget passages of Scripture that tell us God is righteousness or God is truth. It is the antidote to those passages, our big eraser, a very spiritual-sounding shield against all who dare make an embarrassing observation or ask an awkward question about our conduct—especially God.
III. The Pharisees of Luuv are ungodly persons that oppose God.
Just as the Pharisees of the New Testament pretended to themselves and others that they loved God, so their modern counterparts are proved by the Lord Jesus to be imposters because they have substituted their particular brand of religion, tradition, and set of rules for the truth. Their substitute is beguiling. It seems so godly and biblical—god is Luuv. Most Pharisees believe they are godly and saved. They are not godly and most of them are not saved. They ARE supremely religious—even smarmy. Religion oozes out like syrupy poison.
Jesus, on the other hand, was a carpenter who read the Scripture and obeyed it.
IV. Rules of Pharisees of Luuv.
A. Rules are added.
The Smarmisees love to add rules. Unlike their forebears they only add a few rules, because their aim is to feel religious, by ignoring God’s rules. This is so they rarely think about their sin. The original Pharisees felt religious by adding rule upon rule in order to cover over their sin with buckets full of religious deeds and poses. The similarity is that both are aiming to feel more religious, by obscuring their sin, subtly highlighting the misdeeds of others even if those “sins” are only the violation of Pharisee Law. Both hate God and use people for their own glory.
We can break down all the rules added by the Pharisees of Luuv to just seven basics.
Rule One. Never—and I mean NEVER—tell anyone what they are doing is wrong.
Rule Two. Tell anyone who is breaking Rule One that what they are doing is wrong--WAY wrong.
Rule Three. Work “god is Luuv” into any conversation you have. That way others will know you’re luvving and they’re not.
Rule Four. Attend only discussion style Sunday School classes and Bible studies so you can get in at least three god-is-Luuv’s before the final prayer.
Rule Five. Speak very softly, like a young girl in severe pain, in order to rid the congregation of men and so others will know you’re luuving and they’re not.
Rule Six. Perfect a really good smarmy face. Try for that special my-dog-just-died-of-a-hideous- wasting-disease-but-I’m-holding-up-just-fine-thank-you-for-asking kind of smile.
Rule Seven. Frown and object any time words like sin, judgment, or repent are used, especially if the speaker really seems to mean it. Remind that big meany god is Luuv. A furrowed brow helps.
V. Rules are taken away.
This is the important part. Smarmisees don’t really take a scissors to their Bibles and cut out commandments. That would make them all lumpy and kind of thin and they don’t actually READ their Bibles anyway. They already KNOW the three IMPORTANT parts—god is Luuv, knowledge puffs up, and don’t judge (that’s their job.) Instead, they simply repeat their mantra in willowy voices every time sin and righteousness is mentioned. I think it’s kind of like x-ies when we were kids. If some big meany says “God” just say “god is luuv” and the big meany has to go away. If he doesn’t, then bring his name up in prayer meeting when he isn’t there. Use your most girlish voice when asking prayer for his un-luuving attitude. Boy, does THAT score points!
VI. Self absorption of Pharisees of Luuv.
The new Pharisees are self-oriented liars. While the emphasis seems to be right and good, centered on others, self is the over riding concern. Thus appearance is more important than substance. For instance, how many times in discussions with Smarmisees have you heard someone rebuked harshly (but in Luuv) because he spoke the truth to someone who rejected it angrily? The clueless critic will say something to the effect that the sinner would have accepted Jesus if only the speaker had spoken in the Proper Way and at the Proper Time, both of which we non-Pharisees are way too stupid to figure out on our own. The Proper Way has something to do with the painted-on cry-smile and girly voice. The Proper Time never actually comes because the scorn of a sinner will ALWAYS cause the Swamis of Swish to wet their collective pants.
They cannot tolerate rejection because they are disobedient to God or because they are not new creatures in Christ. Even a vicarious rejection through someone else in their church group is too insulting to their inner selves.
VII. Generation of Pharisees of Luuv.
Okay, here is some good news from the bad news. The bad news is that my generation did this to the church. (I bought into these lies, too.) The good news is we are getting old enough that we are becoming irrelevant and many will soon be dead. There are strong indications that God is giving us a younger generation that are more God and truth centered. For instance, today’s students in many Bible colleges are much more apt to embrace the sovereign authority of God over man’s will. Here are the names of some very good Christian leaders that are solidly scriptural: Todd Wilkin of Issues Etc., Michael Horton of The White Horse Inn, Albert Mohler, president of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, John Piper, John McArthur, and others. Many of these good men are in their early forties, promising the church 20 years of productive leadership. This is very good news.
VIII. On-Purpose Ignorance of Pharisees of Luuv.
I use the term ignorance here in its most derogatory sense. I do not mean they are unwitting, unknowing, or ill informed, though some certainly are misled by a predominately effeminate Evangelical clergy. That would be an accident, not their fault. I am referring to the act mentioned in Romans 1 and lots of other Scripture involving the outright suppression of knowable truth. They ignore it. It is a deep-in-the-soul dishonesty, a sin inviting the wrath of God.
A. Pharisees of Luuv are ignorant of Scripture and scriptural love, ON PURPOSE.
The Pharisees of Luuv carry themselves as if they had great wisdom and insight. The truth is that they are ignorant about love—their favorite subject.
To illustrate, try this. Are love and righteousness opposite or the same? If you said “opposite,” you have full blown SOTS, Smarminess of the Soul. Get help.
God’s love is defined by the Apostle of Love, John, as obedience to God. John, after all, is he who said “God is love” in Chapter 4 of his first epistle. He also says in Chapter 5 that the Spirit of God is truth, in the first verse of his gospel that the Son of God is truth, and in Chapter 10 of his gospel that those who do not obey truth are not the Son’s sheep. But those passages don’t seem very important to the Idolaters of Luuv.
B. Pharisees of Luuv are ignorant of God, ON PURPOSE.
One evening in a laundromat, I visited with an idolater. His license plate said “REDEEMD” and he was a teacher at a reputable local church. “Great,” I thought, “he’s a brother.” We each began talking about our respective gods—mine the God of Scripture and his “the god of the New Testament.” I use quotes here because they are his words, not mine. And his words are blasphemous. He informed me that “the god of the Old Testament” killed women and children. “I will not worship that kind of god!” he said with an upturned lip and a feminine superiority in his eyes. I think he expected me to be impressed. I warned him that he was an idolater, worshipping an idol.
This is the most damning sin of the demonically syrupy. Many are like him. Convinced that the God of the Old Testament who promised to “make loving kindness on thousands of those that love Me and keep my commandments” is harsh and that the God of the New Testament who said, some “are prepared for destruction” is tender. This is plainly ignorant. They ignore the Scriptures, ON PURPOSE, to ignore God, ON PURPOSE.
C. Pharisees of Luuv are ignorant of the real outcome of their actions.
The Uptight Ultra-religious commit three errors having to do with the results of the way they act, speak, and believe. First, they believe that their syrupiness will curry favor with God. Remember Malachi? Much of the writings of the prophets have to do with people seeking comfort, not obedience. This is a sin and the outcome will be perdition for many.
Second, they believe they are doing God a favor by representing Him to others as a wuss. We can have more members if only we can be more tolerant, they say. While this mollifies the sinfully religious and pets women and children, men are repulsed by both the wuss god and the wuss preacher.
Third, they believe they are going to curry favor with unbelievers by not acting like Christians.
If getting others to like us means not being us, who do they really like? Obviously it isn’t us. After forty years of being relevant, luuving, charming, winsome, or whatever the new buzz word is from the latest Evangelical wunderkind, Americans hate Christians more than ever before. We deserve it, because we have been lying to them.
IX. Arrogance of Pharisees of Luuv.
The old Pharisees arrogantly rejected the Lord Jesus and His Father. So do the modern ones. Their rejection of God’s person will be dealt with in the next section on idolatry. In addition, they arrogantly reject His wisdom and His words.
In Sunday School I was being lectured by one of the dozen or so Smarmisees in our church. She is a good-hearted lady that is new in the faith, one of those swayed unduly by our predominately effeminate clergy. Her point was typical Evangelical syrup. We cannot be very aggressive or forceful because that is sinful. I asked her if it would be sinful to call a recalcitrant believer foolish or a false teacher a dog. Of course, it was horrible in her mind to do such a thing. I revealed these were the words of Jude and Paul and she laughed, a little embarrassed.
Jesus called the terminally pious dung heaps and more. God calls His people that stray to another god prostitutes. In Hosea, we read “you have loved the wages of a whore on every barn floor.” He obviously would not pass the smarminess test of my Sunday School friend.
Leaders and long-time churchgoers that spout such filth are so unspeakably arrogant they condemn God and all His prophets and apostles. They think they know more and are better than God and all His prophets and apostles. After all, the way God talks is sinful to them. God must be instructed in the god-is-Luuv doctrine. Then, perhaps, if He minds His manners, He can become as moral and luuving and they.
X. Idolatry of Pharisees of Luuv.
The Pharisees of Luuv despise the God of Scripture. They demonstrate this by their insistence on the down grading of God to the god-is-Luuv god. Like my idolater friend in the laundromat, they will not worship the severe God that has revealed Himself in the Bible.
“…for I, Yahweh, your (m,s) God, am a jealous God, reckoning the iniquities of the fathers upon the sons, upon the third generation, and upon the fourth generation for those who hate Me, and making loving kindness for thousands of those who love Me and keep My commandments.”
Did you recognize that quote? Where is it from? It is the second half of the Second Commandment and if you are a churchgoer and did not know that, you are probably an Evangelical or a Catholic. The first half goes like this: “Never make for yourself (m,s) an idol or any image of anything in the heavens above, in the earth beneath, or in the waters under the earth. Never worship them and never serve them, for I Yahweh am a jealous God…” Exodus 20: 4-6.
So then, the White-knucklers will only worship the god of sappiness and syrup. According to Moses’ tablets, they do NOT love God. THEY HATE HIM DEEPLY. They have so earnestly feigned love of God they have been fooled their own act. What it is important for Christians everywhere to understand is these preachers and church members are haters of God, not lovers of God, according to the Word of God.
And they will hate YOU. Remember, John defined love as obedience to God (not goosh) in I John 5: 3 and II John 6. In I John 5:2 he gives us a test to see if we love the children of God. The test is not gooshy talk, a smarmy gaze, or marshmallows on your brain. Read it here below.
“By this we know if we love the children of God, if God we are loving and His commandments we are doing. For this is the love God, that His commandments we keep, and His commandments are not hard.”
The Worshippers of Luuv FAIL the test of Scripture. They major in NOT keeping His commandments if they are outside their tradition or opinion. After all, god is Luuv so they do not have to concern themselves with a lot of Scripture.
XI. Solution to Pharisees of Luuv.
Lit me suggest four steps every church can take to end this new legalism.
A. Pastors, pull your skirts back down and preach the Bible.
Pastors, you must start being men and stop being wusses. Stop selling out for convenience and approval. Many of you have been lazy in the study and cowards in the sanctuary. Study the Scripture and just tell us what it says. Those of us that leave were not really of us.
B. Bible schools and seminaries, stress Scripture, not psychology.
Decide if you believe in the sufficiency of Scripture or not. If the Scripture is good enough “so the man of God may be adequately equipped for every good work,” then you can teach Paul and David, without Jung, Rogers, and Winfrey. You contradict your own doctrinal statements when you insist the pastor must also be trained in psychology as well as Scripture. Psychology treats sin. Scripture calls for repentance and offers redemption. There is not a happy medium between these two views.
C. Church members, hire and encourage Scripture-loving pastors.
Look for, hire, and keep pastors that major in Scripture. Good examples are John MacArthur and J. Vernon Magee. You want a man that teaches Bible and lots of it. If your pastor is weak pray for him and encourage him. He may be a good man with a sensitive nature. Special care must be given to such a man. However, if a pastor persists in mushy, unclear teaching you MUST fire him. He is not of a godly character. Weenie men often compensate for instances of cowardice by gossip and back-biting. When faced with a struggle between truth and lie, they will often attack the truth in gossip because the truth makes them face the lie. I have seen this over and over in both secular and religious settings.
D. Church boards, get rid of physical images of “Jesus.”
“Jesus” pictures glorify effeminacy.
Contrary to the Second Commandment we Evangelicals have a taste for painted images of various guys in long hair and robes. We lie to our children and say these guys are Jesus, thus condemning our children, grand children, and great grand children according to the Second commandment. All the so-called images of Jesus I have ever seen picture some idiot that just had his nails done, to paraphrase Larry Norman. The Sallman picture of the Dork at the Door (Christ at the Door to idolaters) would have us believe that the Jesus of John’s Revelation is NOT arrayed with snow white head and hair, feet of burnished bronze, a sword coming out His mouth, and eyes on FIRE! His face shone like the SUN! Revelation says that He is. You can trust John the Apostle or the clerk at the Bible Book Store. Your choice. As for me and my house, we will stick with the apostle’s version. It seems safer to me.
Sallman’s Dork at the Door is an effeminate fellow just hoping for dear life you’ll let him in. Don’t. He might ask you for a date.

Scriptureless Pulpits
It’s Thursday afternoon. I am running to get material for my shop and I turn the truck radio to the local religious station. Chuck Swindoll is laughing and promising to tell me how his passage of Scripture can help me stay young. Naturally, my curiosity is piqued beyond anything any middle-aged man could possibly stand! Still, I turn the station.
It’s Friday morning. I’m up early. O goody, goody, goosebumps. Benny Hinn is on healing hemorrhoids, taming tumors, and sellin’ the spirit cheap. Call in now. Glory be to Benny’s god, whoever THAT is. I turn the station. Doubly excited, I discover another faith healer that has found it pays more to hock health food than do the healing himself. Hey, it HAS to be easier than sweating buckets into a microphone and pushing some overweight guy to the floor to cure his arthritis, leaving him still curiously overweight. (Benny’s god is very modest that way, I guess. Only heals the stuff that ain’t real showy.)
It’s Sunday Morning. The preacher is simply THRILLED by his cute story. So are several others. It’s all about himself, his car, his wife, his dreams, or his whatever. It helps manage the 36 minutes left in a 40 minute sermon block because he only studied two verses this week. Even HE isn’t able to stretch the spiritual lesson he got from his dog, Poopsie, for 36 minutes. No worries, though. He will slip in five or ten more words from those two verses. You know, the two that are so profound he just has to spend the entire 40 minutes on them. Then and only then will he go into the story about what he saw on that disgusting TV no good Christian should watch and what his neighbor did to his cat. That will leave about 4 minutes for the last phrase of the last verse, and a quick song about accepting Jesus because He really, really, really, really, really, really wants—no NEEDS—you to love Him. Feeding the sheep, right? Yeah, huh.
Fascinated by the story of the time the pastor’s fish tank blah, blah, blah…I somehow force myself to go back to studying and memorizing Scriptures on my own in the pew because I ought to make good use of the time used to get here and sit here. But I’m worried. There’s that lady who dressed me down for twenty minutes for not walking around and talking enough during Greeting Time (another great pastoral time management tool.) She might just light into me for studying the Bible instead of learning about Judge Judy and the pastor’s reaction to the case of the bad hair dryer that made the dog bite the neighbor who got thirteen stitches and an infection and dented his left rear right front fender on the way to the clinic, all of which cost twelve hundred, seventy-eight dollars and thirteen cents. This worries me until I look over to her and see her husband is fast asleep. Alright! I’m home safe for one more week.
I’m jealous, though. Amazingly, many Evangelicals get MORE than two verses! That’s right, they do. I didn’t believe it either until I tuned in Charles Stanley. They may get seven ways to improve your (insert the most disconcerting subject you can think of here) mixed with parts of twelve quickly spurted excuse verses. Excuse verses—some call them proof texts—are very important passages of Scripture that only the speaker could possibly have figured out had ANYTHING to do with the subject he MADE UP for this morning’s sermonette on dating, buying a car, raising pigeons, bicycling, swimming the back stroke, or whatever to the glory of God and the giant cardboard thermometer in the foyer.
If you can relate to any of this, lobby hard to fire your pastor and change the channel. Quickly.
