UNTYING A VERY PRODIGAL KNOT

Dear Prodigal Knot, I've enjoyed communicating with you over the last couple years alot on these blogs. However, I really think you need to be straightened out and I think I know just the fellow to do it. His name is Dr. Darrell Cox.

As it happens, he is speaking at a Baptist church here in Billings and I know he's qualified because of the poster I found in our laundromat made on a home computer with a cheap printer and pinned over some other guy's poster advertising his little home based business, because Dr. Cox is much more important than the little people. The poster listed Dr. Cox's accomplishments. Here are a few to help you understand just how big a wig he is in the religious boobeousie :

1. Pastor of Trinity Baptist Church for over 20 years.

2.Membership of his church is approximately 900 members.

3. Averages over 885 per Sunday in Sunday School.

4.In the year 2004, there were 9,370 souls saved & 1,347 people were baptized.

5. Runs 19 bus routes with an average of 600 people or more per Sunday.

6.Church supports 120 missionaries.

7. Trinity Baptist Academy (Christian School) was started in 1995.

Now, pay attention, PK, because any man who saved over 9,000 folks in one year all on his own ought to be heeded. I mean, Paul didn't even do that. He had to depend on the power of the gospel. Kinda a crutch, I'd say. After all, who needs God's Spirit. We got Darrell, bib overalls-n-all! Hummmm, wonder if he has one of those Southern Baptist puffy hairdoes, where great amounts of effort, hairspray, and prayer are used in a sincere attempt to make an old preacher look like he has the same hair he did in 1963.....? Perhaps, you could come to Billings, where Dr. Cox will be inflicted upon us here and mean preach the gospel of gaaaawwww-duh......at the Gospel Baptist Church at 1246 Cook Street at 7pm March 29 and 30.

You could see his hair!

You know how to get hold of me. You can stay at my house. Come and let Dr. Cox bless the devil (and the doctrines of grace) outta ya.

Tongue in Cheek,
Phil Perkins. PS--For those of you who haven't met PK, he's a great guy, a solid and serious student of Scripture and Christian. His website is here.

Oh, Phil!

I am cracking up over what you said and at the same time feeling bad about laughing at someone who is literally corralling folks into hell. His advocacy of the KJV as the "only" preserved word of God is an indication of spiritual immaturity, I believe. Further, since people can become Christians at the drop of a hat (or the raising of a hand) what is so remarkable about his many conversions? Perhaps he makes it as easy as pie: no surrender of self, no commitment to a holy life, no separation from the world, etc.

Of course, as long as you fly an American flag and wear the name "Christian", you are good to go. The hatred toward Muslims and anyone who holds different religious views is just plain bigotry and not to be said of lovers of Christ. Their theology is wrong, but Christ died in order that they might be saved. Too many "Christians" would rather kill a Muslim than covert them! That is patently the wrong attitude and says a lot about what a man really thinks in his heart.

I found a recommendation for this man where the preacher says of him, "His home town has a population of 800 and his church runs a 1,000 in attendance. Folks, that is just about everyone! Ha!"
The "Ha!" is not mine, but very appropriate, I think. If this man has converted the entire town, then it's crime rate must be almost nil! I doubt, very seriously, that this is the case.

You are much too kind, Phil, to credit me with being more than I am. I strive to be what God wants me to be, but I am always thankful that no matter how good I think I am, Jesus has said, "So you also, when you have done all that you were commanded, say, 'We are unworthy servants; we have only done what was our duty.'"
(Luke 17:10 ESV)

That, and the words to His disciples, "If you, being evil..." came as a great shock to me when I first read the Bible as a newly born-again believer. I was brought up, from a child, in the teachings of men like Finney, Wesley and Daniel S. Warner. I truly believed, for a time, that I was deserving of my salvation, that I had somehow managed to wrestle my way out of a life of sin and self absorption. That I had become what so many are not! I was truly a Pharisee, but God revealed that to me in short order.

And yet, I know that Peter plainly says, "Live as people who are free, not using your freedom as a cover-up for evil, but living as servants of God." (1 Peter 2:16 ESV) Anyone can claim Jesus as their savior, but dishonor Him by not living for Him. To me, I think "taking the name of the Lord in vain" applies to this act of claiming to believe, but proving by one's life that they are a liar.

Thanks for your stand for holy and righteous living, Phil. Not many listen these days. They'd rather hear us use the verses I quoted to excuse their behavior rather than have it make them grateful for the grace that covers their unintentional (and I emphasize that!) sin.

PK,
Yeah, I looked him up, too. It's pretty rediculous. Did you watch the video about how to get saved?

Notice how there is no mention of repentance in regard to salvation, but you'd better use the KJV.

He doesn't know anything.

I see a thread about right wing politics in your remarks. I agree with you whole heartedly!
Did God commission us to save societies by political power or did He commission us to save individuals by the power of the gospel so the individuals would be hated by the societies they lived in.

Right wing politics or left wing politic married to the gospel mars and twists it. Right wing politics in the ME church is an effort to avoid the persecution that is rightly ours.

Tell an MEer that he lives in a city of 100,000 sinners in need of the gospel and he'll promise to pray about it. After he's done watching the game, I suppose. Tell him a gay bar is opening around the corner and he'll write his mayor and start a petition drive. He won't go there and visit with the guys, but he'll do his best to pretend they don't exist.

In my last church I got in real trouble for asking them to do away with the flag during worship. I think it's blasphemous. The flag is a symbol of allegiance and fidelity.

One of the things the Reformers brought with them from the Catholics is the idea of religious empire and large religious institutions. None of it's biblical and the idea of a "Christian nation" is actually anti-biblical. In the NT, we're promised persecution at the hand of the political and religious institutions of every nation.

When did that change?

With Constantine, I think, and it seems to be a cold we never got over.

Phil.PS--How's Jim Andrews?

PK,
Two more things. 1. I CAN spell ridiculous. 2. I vote conservative. I just don't think Americanism and Christianity are the same.

What do you think of the current chaos? Are you positive about how our country is veering left?

Here's a thought I have from time to time: If the nation keeps galloping into Marxism or socialism and we fall, could that be God's way of purifying the church? I sometimes think poverty and persecution may be better. It might feel pretty stupid to bring the flag in when the nation is seeking to jail you for worshiping God.

Phil.

And I don't hate the Reformers, just for the record. We just got onto a couple things I think they did wrong.

Phil,

I'm with you on the whole view of keeping America out of the church building. We are in America, but America is definitely NOT in the body of Christ or anywhere we assemble for worship.

As for Jim Andrews, he's still doing "The Final Word" and sticking to the Complimetarian view of roles (good for him!). He is a gracious and kind man who has made time for me, even on vacation,(!) to consider my questions. Granted it's been over a year since we actually communicated, but I still admire him and his views. I just don't agree with all of them.

As far as the country goes, I'm of the mind that, as Paul said, "judgment begins with us", the church, and I say "Go to it, Lord!" I want the church shaken out, whether it be through financial calamity, disease, disaster, etc., so be it. People need to be shook out of their boots - me included - and figure out whether they are truly on God's side or not. I don't care is we end up with 50% of the church building being emptied, or more! People need to take God and the sriptural conditions He has laid out are understood and taught properly.

Sorry my reply is brief, but I'm outta time today.
